Thanks for being here!

My name is Lucy. I have worked with boots on the ground in fuels reduction, prescribed burning and fire suppression at the nonprofit and federal levels, for the last two seasons, and in the realm of forestry & conservation related work for the last seven years. I first picked up a chainsaw in my home state of Vermont where I was raised in close relationship with the land. I have a strong interest in restoring the relationship between our human and ecological communities, for I believe their wellbeing to be interdependent.

I originally started this blog to document my experience as a wildland firefighter, a responder to one face of our current environmental crisis. I believe this environmental crisis actually stems from and is a reflection of a more serious cultural crisis. We have a lot of work to do to restore our relationship with nature. It is easy to get burnt out working to restore the many imbalances we have created. I began a season in fire suppression this spring and decided to step away in late August to re-evaluate how I can sustain my goal to contribute to living better on this planet. The writings here are my own experiences and opinion and do not state or reflect those of the the United States Forest Service, USDA or United States Government.

For $5/month, you will receive my newest writing directly to your inbox. I have committed 10% of each month’s new subscriptions to an organization focused on restoring the relationship between human and ecological communities. Each month I will choose a different recipient to distribute the love and give a little feature on the important work they are doing and how that fits into my mission here, which is tending to the landscapes we inhabit, our minds and bodies included. I am open to your recommendations! We are all members of the same team.

Your subscription will get you full access to my newsletter updates and website, as well as pieces I’ve saved just for you. It is my belief that what makes us come alive can be a generator for positive change. For me that’s writing. Through inquiry, connection, and reflection, I hope my work on its small scale inspires you to do what makes you come alive, to take care of this good planet and the good people trying to steward it for the lifetimes we will not live to see.

Take a place on the team

My crew captain said to me at the start of my fire season this year, “I can’t promise you a voice in big change but I can promise you a place on the team”. I know my team includes some of you. I am not sure where this writing project will go, or how impactful it will be, but I am motivated to share. If you’re here, you are already encouraging me to keep going forward, and that means the world to me. Quite literally, because that’s what I’m fighting for. Thanks for being on my team.
